Arch stone bridges scattered all over mainland Greece are inseparably interwoven not only with Greek traditional architecture but also with local and national history, as shown by the countless folk songs and legends linked with them. The arch stone bridge of Plaka, about 50 km from the city of Ioannina, was built over Arachthos River, in a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, on the site of an older bridge that was destroyed in 1860. It was the largest single-arch bridge in the Balkans and the third largest one in Europe, as it was 21 meters high and 71 meters long, with an arch span of 40 meters. In 1863 it was built from scratch with a grant of Dimitrios Arvanitoyannis from the nearby village of Pramanta, but it collapsed again shortly after its formal inauguration. It was reconstructed in 1866 and the cost, which amounted to 170,000 piastres, was covered by the banker Ioannis Loulis and donations from the local communities. Unfortunately, in 2007, the bridge collapsed almost entirely due to heavy rains and in February 2015 what remained of the central part collapsed and was washed away by a flash flood. The government responded immediately and the National Metsovian Technical University of Athens undertook to design and plan the restoration of the historical bridge. Nirikos Techniki SA and Iliopoulos Bros General Partnership are cooperating in this awesome construction project, which is already underway, while PROLAT contributes the materials needed. The restoration of this historical monument, which is considered to be one of the greatest challenges in the technical construction sector worldwide, proceeds based on the specifications of the original materials of the old bridge. The materials used for the reconstruction are the certified products of PROLAT used by the archaeological services for plasters and grouting. Several local masons and stone hewers contribute their valuable experience, giving stones the desirable form and shape with their hammers and chisels, to ensure a final result as close as possible to the original structure. The highly functional and welcoming environment of a new state-of-the-art building will house the National Library of Greece, which is to modernize and expand its scope so as to cater to the needs of a very broad public of all age groups and educational levels, from academic researchers to adolescents and children, and will include a lending library, a research unit and exhibition space, in an area of nearly 22,000 m2. The Greek National Opera will be another pole of attraction in SNFCC not only for music lovers but also for all those who are fascinated by pioneering architectural creations. The new opera house, a 28,000 m2 versatile space with perfect acoustics, able to make good use of new technologies and suitable for various kinds of performances and events, also includes a children’s stage, a smaller alternative stage, and a dance school. This impressive structure is situated in a picturesque green landscape with verdant gardens, alleys, paths, water fountains and playgrounds that offers precious breaths of life and open spaces suitable both for recreation and for artistic expression and creation so much-needed in the densely populated metropolis. In the Mediterranean Garden visitors can enjoy a feast of colours and fragrances and discover plants and flowers of the Greek flora. Winding paths starting from the Mediterranean Garden lead to a gently inclined hill beneath which is the building of the National Library and the Opera House. On the summit of the park stands the Reading Room, a glass-walled structure with unobstructed views ideal for reading, daydreaming or meditation. A tree-lined Esplanade runs parallel to it, along a wide canal connected with the sea. Here visitors may enjoy strolling, jogging or cycling. The world-renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano has been one of the top architects on a global scale for the last 40 years. He has made his mark with pioneering works all over the world, such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the International Terminal at the Kansai International Airport in Osaka, the Beyeler Foundation Museum in Basel, Switzerland, the redevelopment of Potsdamer Square in Berlin, the new offices of the “New York Times” and the “green” building of the California Academy of Sciences in the United States etc. The multi-award winning architect has a unique ability to make the most of the particular features of every location, showing utmost respect for the “genius loci”, namely the spirit of each place; using his favourite materials (glass, wood, metal), in combination with natural light and the water element, wherever this is possible, he harmoniously incorporates his creations to the existing urban grid, always in accordance with the principles of sustainability, which is a top priority for him. The entire project has been executed according to the highest technical and environmental specifications, while strict processes and quality controls have been applied both to the selection of the materials and to the methods of using and incorporating them into the final overall result. PROLAT has played its own part in this significant large-scale project. Renzo Piano has honoured us with his trust, as our company was selected to cover all floors and pathways in the gardens and open spaces. So, 12.35 of the approximately 50 acres of the SNFCC have been covered with stabilized ceramic floor, PROLAT Floor. Tsingouinos is a new restaurant opened in Escape Center, in Ilion. In beautiful Rhodes, under the shade of the Acropolis, there is a traditional family house built in 1876 that was renovated in 2011 with love and care. The challenge for PROLAT this time was to use a material suitable for the floor and the walls of the hotel’s café; it had to be not only aesthetically attractive but also particularly resistant, as the hotel is only 3 metres from the sea. PROLAT Lavaplaster covered these needs ideally, ensuring a final result that combines natural appearance, beauty and strength. The demands for the external wall, which is almost in direct contact with the sea, were even higher. The material chosen for application to that surface was PROLAT VISTRO, a special plaster with hydraulic lime. This type of plaster does not contain any cement at all, so it literally “breathes” and is not affected by humidity and the salt in seawater. It is worth noting that the wall needs no maintenance, which is an additional practical advantage that makes this product ideal for use in difficult settings, such as surfaces exposed to the elements, e.g. lighthouses.
